Digital signal purification and clock stabilization for Hi-Fi systems

The MUSICIAN Audio Pisces III is a high-performance DDC, or digital-to-digital converter, designed to purify, stabilize and enhance the precision of the digital signal path in modern Hi-Fi systems. Its role is to restructure the audio signal received via the USB input, improve its timing accuracy, and reduce jitter and electrically induced noise that may appear in the digital chain.

The Pisces III can play an important role in demanding digital systems where the stability of the signal transmitted to the DAC directly affects the clarity, detail retrieval and spatial accuracy of sound reproduction.

High-precision clock system and jitter control

One of the core elements of the Pisces III is its high-stability TCXO crystal oscillator system, operating at reference frequencies of 45.1584 MHz and 49.152 MHz. These clock signals form the foundation of digital audio signal timing, giving them a key role in reducing jitter and maintaining the precision of data transmission.

Thanks to the stable clock signal, the audio signal becomes more resistant to disruptive factors within the digital chain, allowing signal transmission with lower jitter and a cleaner digital background.

USB input and precise digital resynchronization

The device receives the digital audio signal through its USB input, then passes it through a high-precision resynchronization and signal conditioning process. This is not simple format handling: the Pisces III also stabilizes the timing structure of the digital data stream, effectively reducing issues caused by computer-based sources and external electromagnetic interference.

As a result, a more stable, lower-noise digital signal is available on the output side, providing more favorable operating conditions for the connected DAC. More accurate timing and a cleaner signal path can contribute to reduced distortion, better preservation of detail and more predictable operation of the digital chain.

Versatile digital output system with PCM and DSD support

Thanks to its wide range of digital outputs, the MUSICIAN Audio Pisces III can be flexibly integrated into various Hi-Fi and professional audio systems. The device includes AES/EBU, optical, coaxial, I2S-A HDMI and I2S-C LVCMOS connectors, allowing the Pisces III to operate as a universal DDC unit between the digital source and the DAC.

The device is also prepared to handle modern digital audio formats. For PCM, sampling rates of up to 1536 kHz are available via USB and I2S, while DSD format support extends to DSD1024, enabling the device to work effectively with high-resolution digital sources and modern DAC units.

Native I2S output and advanced compatibility

The I2S output is one of the most direct forms of digital audio signal transmission, as in certain cases the signal can reach the DAC with fewer intermediate conversion stages. The Pisces III offers native I2S support via HDMI and LVCMOS connections, allowing precise integration into advanced digital systems.

The device offers 8 different I2S modes, with automatic and manual adjustment options to support compatibility with different DAC architectures. Selecting the appropriate I2S mode is important for stable, low-noise and accurate digital signal transmission, especially in systems where the DAC is sensitive to I2S pin assignment and signal format.

ARM and FPGA-based control architecture

The operation of the Pisces III is controlled by an ARM STM32F446-based microcontroller, which manages real-time digital processes while maintaining low power consumption.

Digital signal processing is also supported by ALTERA FPGA-based logic control. The advantage of the FPGA structure is that it enables complex digital operations to be executed in a predictable, highly precise and low-latency manner. This directly contributes to preserving signal integrity and to operation focused on jitter reduction.
