At the heart of the DAC is a fully discrete R2R resistor ladder module. In this design, the digital signal is converted directly into analogue voltage through a precision resistor network, without the use of an integrated Delta-Sigma DAC circuit.

The 26-bit R2R module uses high-precision resistor matching, which plays a key role in linearity and channel matching. The design is specifically optimised for processing high-resolution digital signals, so the conversion is handled entirely by dedicated hardware.

The DAC-R26II supports not only PCM but also native 1-bit DSD processing. Through the appropriate digital input, the DSD data stream is sent directly to the D/A converter, eliminating the need for PCM conversion.

Native DSD processing up to DSD2048 is supported via the IIS input, while USB supports up to DSD512. Direct DSD mode preserves the original PDM data stream, allowing compatible DSD signals to be processed without DSP conversion.

The DAC features a built-in network bridge module that enables direct network music playback without the need for an external streamer. The unit can be integrated into a home network via Ethernet.

The network system supports Roon Bridge, AirPlay, UPnP, Spotify, HQPlayer NAA and MConnect-compatible operation, among others. It uses a proprietary optimised Linux-based software environment designed to prioritise the audio data stream and minimise digital timing errors.

The DAC-R26II offers a wide range of digital connectivity options, making it easy to connect a computer, streamer, CD transport or other digital source.

The unit provides USB, LAN, AES/EBU, coaxial, optical and HDMI-based IIS inputs, as well as Bluetooth 5.1 wireless reception. USB connectivity is handled by an XMOS XU216 controller, supporting PCM up to 768 kHz and native DSD512. The IIS input supports PCM up to 1536 kHz and native DSD2048. The HDMI connector is used exclusively for IIS data transmission and is not compatible with conventional HDMI devices.

In addition to wired and network sources, the DAC-R26II can also receive wireless audio via Bluetooth 5.1. This allows music to be streamed directly to the DAC from a compatible smartphone, tablet or other Bluetooth source.

Bluetooth transmission is based on the Qualcomm QCC5125 platform and supports LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX LL, AAC and SBC codecs. With LDAC, audio transmission at up to 96 kHz is available with a compatible source device.

The accuracy of digital timing has a fundamental impact on digital audio operation. The DAC-R26II uses several solutions designed to generate a stable clock signal. The unit uses a femtosecond crystal oscillator and also features a GCLK-02 PLL clock module.

In addition, an external 10 MHz reference clock can be connected via BNC. The PLL system provides 1 Hz synchronisation accuracy, which can further improve clock stability when used with a compatible external reference source.

After digital conversion, the analogue output stage and its power supply are key elements in determining analogue signal quality. The DAC-R26II also uses a fully discrete solution in this area.

The analogue output stage uses a discrete Class-A low-pass filter. The digital and analogue circuits are powered separately by two independent toroidal transformers. Multi-stage LDO regulation, separate power rails and multi-stage filtering are intended to reduce interaction between the digital and analogue sections while maintaining a low noise floor.

According to independent reviews and listening impressions, the R26II has a slightly warm, natural and relaxed sound character. Several reviews highlight the midrange as one of its strengths: vocals are well defined, fine textures and dynamic variations are easy to follow, while the presentation avoids becoming sharp or overly analytical. The soundstage is described as wide and layered, with a stable centre image and clearly separated spatial planes.

According to reviews, the bass is controlled, tight and rhythmically precise, while transients are more pronounced compared with the original R26. This particularly helps instrument separation and the clarity of musical structure in more complex passages. Listening reports generally highlight the smooth, natural presentation associated with the R2R architecture, combined with strong bass control, clear spatial separation and a coherent overall sound.
