The DD HIFI DJ30SE is a compact signal-conversion adapter that allows headphones or earphones with a 3.5mm single-ended plug to be used from a 4.4mm balanced output. Its design routes the positive channels of the balanced signal correctly to the 3.5mm socket.

Its precise internal wiring does not tie the negative balanced channels to ground, avoiding the load-related risks associated with unsuitable basic adapters. The fully metal, CNC-machined AL6063 aluminium alloy housing and silver-plated OCC internal wiring provide a durable, shielded construction.

The DD HIFI DJ30SE is a compact, passive adapter that connects 3.5 mm stereo headphones or earphones to a suitably designed 4.4 mm balanced headphone output. Its internal wiring is not a simple connector conversion: it safely derives a single-ended output from the balanced signal, so use depends on the grounding arrangement of the source device’s 4.4 mm connector.

A PROPER CONVERSION FROM A BALANCED OUTPUT

Connecting the negative contacts of a balanced output to ground would be incorrect, as it may create unnecessary load and could damage the device. Instead, the DJ30SE routes the L+ and R+ signals of the 4.4 mm socket to the 3.5 mm TRS socket, while the return path uses the dedicated ground contact of the 4.4 mm connector.

In the manufacturer’s description, the construction uses part of the balanced output’s power to create a single-ended 3.5 mm output. It therefore works only with a 4.4 mm output whose fifth contact is genuinely grounded.

WHEN CAN IT BE USED?

One situation is when a compatible portable player, DAC or headphone amplifier provides a 4.4 mm balanced headphone output, while the headphones or IEM cable to be connected terminates in a 3.5 mm TRS plug. In this case, the DJ30SE accepts the 3.5 mm cable; it is not intended as a permanent replacement for the headphones’ original cable.

It can also be useful where a device’s 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm outputs differ in gain or output impedance. This does not mean that the 4.4 mm output is automatically the better choice: the aim is a documented, compatible connection and correct use of the system’s available settings.

LOW PROFILE, FULL-METAL HOUSING

The DJ30SE housing is CNC-machined from AL6063 aluminium alloy. Its sandblasted titanium-grey, thicker anodised finish provides a wear-resistant exterior, while the adapter weighs only approximately 5.2 grams.

The full-metal housing also provides shielding, while the internal wiring uses silver-plated OCC. The manufacturer specifies a housing size of 16.4 × 16.1 × 10 mm excluding the plug, so it adds only a small amount to the connector’s space requirement in front of the device.

COMPATIBILITY: CHECK GROUNDING BEFORE PURCHASE

For the DJ30SE to operate, the fifth contact of the source’s 4.4 mm connector must be grounded. Sony music players equipped with a 4.4 mm output do not provide this grounding, so these models cannot be used with the DJ30SE adapter.

Compatibility must not be assumed with fully balanced headphone amplifiers whose manuals prohibit grounding or shorting the outputs. The manuals for the TOPPING L70 and A70 Pro explicitly prohibit this, so the DJ30SE is not recommended for the 4.4 mm headphone outputs of these two models.

Safe connection

Set the volume to minimum or switch off the source before connecting. If the device documentation does not clearly describe the operation of the 4.4 mm ground contact, do not use the adapter until compatibility has been verified.
