The ONIX TOCATA XM2 CU is the limited solid-copper edition of the XM2, combining the series' exceptionally compact format with a distinctive, more substantial metal chassis. Its dedicated music system focuses solely on playback, local files and network functions.

The eight-channel Cirrus Logic CS4308P DAC, fully balanced signal path and Brighton I/V circuit provide precise digital-to-analog conversion. The player offers both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs, with up to 800mW at 32 ohms from the balanced connection.

MicroSD local playback, Tidal streaming, DLNA and AirPlay networking provide direct access to music libraries and services. Two-way Bluetooth, USB DAC mode and USB digital output allow the player to integrate flexibly into portable and home audio systems.

LIMITED COPPER EDITION · COMPACT HI-FI MUSIC PLAYER

ONIX XM2 CU

The limited-production copper edition of the ONIX Tocata XM2. A full copper alloy chassis with a red copper finish and an anti-oxidation protective layer. Inside, the same fully balanced Cirrus Logic CS4308P-based signal path delivers up to 800 mW into 32 Ω. According to the manufacturer, the copper chassis brings a warmer, richer sound and a darker background.

ONIX XM2 Cu limited copper edition portable hi-fi music player

The ONIX XM2 Cu is a special edition of the brand's most compact music player. The aluminium chassis of the Tocata XM2 is replaced by one made entirely of copper alloy. This changes more than the look: according to the manufacturer, the higher density and better shielding of copper also make an audible difference.

The internal electronics are identical to the standard model: the same eight-channel Cirrus Logic DAC, the same Brighton I/V stage and the same fully balanced output amplifier. The only difference is the material and finish of the chassis. The XM2 Cu is made for listeners who want a unique, collectible piece in a compact player they can use every day.

WHY COPPER? THE CU EDITION CHASSIS

ONIX XM2 Cu limited copper edition in the spotlight — Limited copper edition with red copper finish and anti-oxidation layer

The main chassis of the XM2 Cu is made entirely of copper alloy. Its rich red copper finish is protected by a durable anti-oxidation layer, so the player keeps its distinctive colour for a long time. According to the manufacturer, it feels smoother and noticeably denser in the hand than the aluminium base model.

Copper is denser than aluminium and shields better. The heavier chassis is less prone to resonance, and the shielding protects against external electromagnetic interference. ONIX credits this for the lower distortion and darker background of the CU edition.

Limited production

The XM2 Cu is a limited copper edition from ONIX, produced only in restricted quantities. If you want the CU edition, don't wait too long: once stock runs out, restocking is not guaranteed.

Higher densityThe solid copper alloy chassis weighs 208 g and is less prone to resonance than lighter aluminium.

Better shieldingCopper protects more effectively against external electromagnetic interference, which shows in a quieter background.

Protected finishThe anti-oxidation layer preserves the red copper colour and the smooth feel of the chassis.

SAME ELECTRONICS, DIFFERENT SOUND CHARACTER

Both editions share the same internal design; according to the manufacturer, the difference in sound comes from the chassis material. The aluminium XM2 is clean, neutral and energetic. The copper CU edition adds a warmer, fuller tone to the same clarity.

The Cirrus Logic CS4308P DAC of the ONIX XM2 — Identical electronics in both editions, built around the Cirrus Logic CS4308P

Tocata XM2 · aluminium

Clean, transparent and powerful sound: energetic yet controlled bass, neutral midrange and smooth, non-fatiguing treble. A good choice when accuracy and low weight matter most.

XM2 Cu · copper

According to the manufacturer: warmer and richer tones while preserving clarity, enhanced dynamics and more transparent treble, plus lower distortion, a darker background and better detail retrieval.

FLAGSHIP DAC AND BRIGHTON I/V STAGE

ONIX was born in Brighton, England, in the 1980s and still puts British hi-fi tuning at the centre of its products. The XM2 family is the first ONIX model to use the Cirrus Logic eight-channel CS4308P DAC. The chip handles PCM up to 768 kHz / 32-bit and native DSD up to DSD512.

The DAC's current output is converted to voltage by the in-house Brighton I/V stage, named after the brand's hometown and built around two low-noise OPA1612 op-amps. Headphones are driven by parallel SGM8262 amplifiers in a fully balanced topology. The digital clock is managed by an FPGA and two dedicated crystal oscillators to reduce jitter and keep timing precise.

3.5 MM AND 4.4 MM OUTPUTS WITH TWO GAIN LEVELS

The XM2 Cu offers a 3.5 mm single-ended and a 4.4 mm balanced headphone output. The balanced output delivers four times the power, with a higher signal-to-noise ratio and much better channel separation, giving plenty of headroom even for harder-to-drive headphones.

Low gain

For sensitive in-ear monitors (IEMs). Finer volume control and a lower noise floor, with 51 mW single-ended and 200 mW balanced into 32 Ω.

High gain

For full-size headphones. Delivers 204 mW single-ended and 800 mW balanced into 32 Ω, so dynamic peaks stay clean and undistorted.

TOUCHSCREEN, REAL BUTTONS, A SYSTEM BUILT FOR MUSIC

The music-optimised system and display of the ONIX XM2 — Music-optimised in-house system, 3-inch OLED touchscreen

The 3-inch OLED touchscreen offers deep blacks, vivid colours and wide viewing angles, and the image can be rotated in four directions. The player does not run Android but ONIX's own system, optimised purely for music playback. It boots quickly and is free of unnecessary apps and notifications.

The system offers a 10-band graphic EQ, user and factory presets, and four selectable digital filters. Playback can be controlled from your pocket with the front metal buttons, the customisable Fn button and the knurled volume knob, which also turns the screen on and off.

WIRELESS AND USB TOO

The XM2 Cu is more than a local music player. It can act as a streaming source, a wireless transmitter and receiver, and a USB DAC for your computer.

Two-way Bluetooth 5.2

Sends to wireless headphones via LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC or SBC, and receives music from your phone as a receiver.

Wi-Fi streaming

2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, built-in Tidal, plus DLNA and AirPlay for network music libraries. Tidal availability may vary by region.

USB DAC

PALM-SIZED, AND ON YOUR PHONE WITH A MAGNETIC CASE

The XM2 is the smallest ONIX player: it fits in your palm and pocket, yet it is a fully fledged hi-fi source. The copper edition's denser 208 g chassis sits well in the hand, and the physical buttons and volume knob can be used without looking.

WHERE THE XM2 CU SITS IN THE ONIX RANGE

ONIX portable players follow two directions. The Overture XM5 and the Waltz XM10 offer more power and more features in a larger body. The Tocata XM2, by contrast, delivers the brand's tuning and design in the smallest, most portable form. The XM2 Cu takes that same compact player to collector level.
