The TOPPING E70 VELVET and L70 package combines a high-resolution desktop DAC with a fully balanced headphone amplifier. The E70 VELVET accepts music through USB, optical, coaxial and Bluetooth inputs, then converts it into analogue audio through its AKM AK4499EX DAC and XMOS XU316 USB interface.

The L70 takes over dedicated headphone amplification through its fully balanced NFCA architecture. Its 4-pin XLR, 4.4 mm and 6.35 mm outputs, two gain settings and relay-based R2R volume control provide precise adjustment for sensitive IEMs and substantial power reserves for demanding headphones.

The TOPPING E70 VELVET and L70 form a complete desktop digital audio system. The E70 VELVET receives the signal from a computer, network player, television or mobile device and converts it to high-resolution analogue audio. TWO COMPONENTS, ONE CLEAR SIGNAL PATH

The system follows a simple, purposeful route. Connect the digital source to the E70 VELVET through USB, optical, coaxial or Bluetooth. Its AKM AK4499EX DAC converts the music into an analogue signal, which then travels through a balanced XLR or single-ended RCA interconnect to the L70.

The L70 acts as a dedicated analogue amplification stage. Digital conversion, input selection and wireless reception remain the E70 VELVET’s task, while the L70 delivers the gain, current and volume control required for headphones, as well as the option to control an active speaker or power-amplifier system.

The two units complement one another instead of duplicating the same job. Digital sources connect to the E70 VELVET, while headphones connect to the L70. This keeps the system easy to operate and leaves room to expand it later with active speakers or a separate power amplifier.

TOPPING E70 VELVET XMOS XU316 USB interface — The 16-core XMOS XU316 USB interface supports high-resolution music playback from a computer, phone or other compatible USB source.

USB, S/PDIF AND BLUETOOTH IN ONE DAC

The E70 VELVET accepts PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD512 through USB. This makes it suitable for direct connection to a computer, compatible mobile device, streamer or USB digital transport. Its coaxial and optical inputs support PCM up to 24-bit/192 kHz from CD transports, televisions, set-top boxes and other S/PDIF sources.

The Qualcomm QCC5125 Bluetooth 5.1 receiver supports LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, aptX, AAC and SBC codecs. With a compatible source, LDAC supports transmission up to 24-bit/96 kHz, while the received digital signal is processed by the E70 VELVET’s own AK4499EX DAC stage.

AK4499EX CONVERSION AND NFCA HEADPHONE AMPLIFICATION

The E70 VELVET’s AKM AK4499EX DAC converts digital data into a line-level analogue signal. Under specified manufacturer test conditions, its XLR output is rated for up to 131 dB of signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range, with THD+N below 0.00006% at 1 kHz.

The L70’s fully balanced NFCA, Nested Feedback Composite Amplifier, architecture then amplifies that analogue signal for headphone use. Separating the DAC and amplifier stages means the high-power headphone amplifier does not share its enclosure with the DAC’s digital input and wireless circuits.

THE RIGHT CONNECTION FOR EVERY HEADPHONE

The L70 front panel provides 4-pin XLR, 4.4 mm Pentaconn and 6.35 mm headphone outputs. Headphones with balanced cables can use the 4-pin XLR or 4.4 mm output, while conventional headphones connect through the 6.35 mm socket. The supplied 6.35 mm to 3.5 mm adapter also allows use with earphones and headphones fitted with a 3.5 mm plug.

Two gain settings help the L70 accommodate sensitive IEMs as well as headphones requiring greater voltage or current. Its relay-based resistor-ladder R2R volume control stores individual volume and gain values for each output mode, making transitions between different headphones more predictable.

TOPPING L70 headphone and earphone compatibility — High voltage headroom matters for high-impedance headphones, high current delivery supports low-sensitivity designs, and low noise is important with sensitive earphones.

BALANCED XLR CONNECTION BETWEEN DAC AND AMPLIFIER

Connect the E70 VELVET’s XLR analogue output to the L70’s Combo XLR input to maintain a balanced analogue signal path from the DAC through to the L70’s balanced headphone outputs. The system can also be connected through RCA if a single-ended interconnect better suits the installation.

For the most straightforward daily use, set the E70 VELVET to DAC mode with its XLR output selected, then use the L70 as the system’s main volume control. The E70 VELVET acts as the digital source selector and fixed-level DAC, while the L70 controls the listening level for headphones and, where required, the connected active system.

The analogue interconnect and any 12 V Trigger cable are selected separately according to the planned installation. Use only one analogue connection, XLR or RCA, between the E70 VELVET and L70 at a time.

SYNCHRONISED COMPONENTS, SIMPLE DAILY CONTROL

Connect the E70 VELVET Trigger Out to the L70 Trigger In to let the amplifier follow the DAC’s power state. The E70 VELVET can wake when it detects an active input signal, and the Trigger connection can in turn activate the L70.

For regular use, select the source on the E70 VELVET and adjust volume on the L70. This division of control keeps source selection and digital processing on the DAC, while the L70’s relay volume control remains responsible for the listening level.

MORE THAN A HEADPHONE SYSTEM

The L70’s preamplifier function allows the package to become the analogue control centre of an active speaker system. The L70 receives the E70 VELVET’s converted signal and sends a variable-level signal through its RCA or XLR outputs to active speakers or a separate power amplifier.

The L70 menu can select its headphone outputs, RCA and XLR line outputs, or combined headphone and preamplifier operation. When connecting active speakers or a power amplifier, always start with a low L70 volume setting and raise it gradually.

Which component should control volume?

For this E70 VELVET and L70 system, using the E70 VELVET in DAC mode and the L70 as the main volume control is generally the clearest setup. The DAC provides a fixed signal level, while the L70 manages the actual listening volume for the connected headphones or active system.

COMPACT, STACKABLE DESKTOP SYSTEM

Both the E70 VELVET and L70 measure 200 × 138 × 44 mm, so they can be stacked without increasing the system footprint. Their matching black and silver finishes create a unified appearance, while the front-panel controls and connections remain accessible in a stacked arrangement.
