The Denafrips Terra is a high-precision master clock generator developed to provide a shared timing reference for digital audio systems. Its dual temperature-controlled OCXO reference oscillators support stable operation with very low jitter.

The unit provides two fixed 45.1584 MHz outputs, two fixed 49.152 MHz outputs, and a selection of switchable audio clock frequencies. Its 75-ohm BNC connections allow integration with compatible DACs, DDCs, streamers, and other digital components.

A multi-stage linear power supply with an O-Core transformer creates a low-noise and stable operating environment for the clock circuitry. The compact enclosure supports flexible integration into advanced digital audio systems.

High-Precision Reference Clock Generator

The Denafrips Terra is a high-precision master clock, or central clock generator, designed for high-end digital audio systems. It provides a stable, exceptionally low-noise reference clock signal for compatible DACs, DDCs, network players and other digital components, allowing the timing of the entire system to be aligned to a common reference signal.

In digital audio, the clock signal determines the precise timing of data processing. Short-term fluctuations in the clock signal, known as jitter, along with higher phase noise, can introduce uncertainty into this process. The Terra was therefore designed with an emphasis on clock accuracy, low phase noise and long-term frequency stability.

OCXO-Based Precision Clock

The Denafrips Terra is built around two high-precision OCXO (Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillator) crystal oscillators. With this technology, the quartz crystal operates in a regulated, constant-temperature environment, making its frequency significantly less susceptible to changes in external temperature.

The two oscillators generate reference frequencies of 45.1584 MHz and 49.152 MHz, which are integer multiples of the 44.1 and 48 kHz sample-rate families, providing a suitable foundation for generating the various clock signals used in digital audio. Temperature-controlled operation also reduces frequency deviation and ensures consistent performance over extended periods of operation.

Low Jitter and Phase Noise

The performance of a high-resolution digital system is influenced not only by the DAC architecture or the method of signal processing, but also by timing accuracy. The Terra is designed to provide connected devices with a low-jitter, low-phase-noise reference signal.

Low phase noise reduces short-term uncertainty in the clock signal, while the stable reference enables predictable timing throughout the digital signal chain. This can be particularly important in complex systems where multiple components can be synchronised to the same external master clock.

Linear Power Supply for Clean Power Delivery

Power supply quality is fundamental in a precision clock generator, as interference originating from the power supply can also affect oscillator performance. The Terra uses a multi-stage, high-current linear power supply fed by an oversized O-Core transformer.

The power supply is designed for low noise, stable voltage delivery and rapid transient response. The OCXO units therefore receive a consistent DC voltage that supports proper thermal stability, while carefully isolated circuit sections reduce interaction between individual components.

Versatile Clock Outputs

The Denafrips Terra supports multiple standard clock frequencies, allowing it to be integrated into digital audio systems with a variety of configurations. The required reference frequencies can be selected directly from the front panel, making it easy to adapt the unit’s operation to the specific system.

The fixed outputs provide 45.1584 MHz and 49.152 MHz reference clock signals. The adjustable outputs can be set to 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 11.2896 MHz, 12.288 MHz, 22.5792 MHz or 24.576 MHz, enabling synchronisation with a wide range of digital components based on the 44.1 and 48 kHz sample-rate families.

Integration into a Digital Audio System

The Terra is not a DAC and performs neither digital-to-analogue conversion nor audio signal processing. Its sole purpose is to generate a precise reference clock signal to which digital devices equipped with a compatible clock input can be synchronised.

This is primarily beneficial in systems where multiple digital components, such as a streamer, DDC and DAC, operate together. Provided that the devices are compatible with the frequencies and connection standards offered by the Terra, the shared master clock can establish a unified timing reference for the entire digital signal path.

Thoughtful Design and Precise Construction

Every essential element of the Denafrips Terra’s construction is designed to support precise and reliable clock generation. The two separate OCXO oscillators, high-performance linear power supply and carefully designed internal circuit layout work together to provide an appropriate operating environment for the precision components.

Particular attention was paid to reducing electrical noise, regulating the supply voltage and minimising crosstalk between circuit sections. As a result, the Terra can be integrated into a high-end digital system as a stable central clock source that prioritises the coordinated operation of compatible components.
