Compact USB-C DAC and headphone amplifier with premium construction
The iBasso Jr. Macaron USB-C DAC & AMP is a portable high-resolution USB DAC and headphone amplifier designed to enhance the sound quality of smartphones, tablets, and computers. Its CNC-machined aluminum chassis weighs just 16 grams, giving the device a lightweight yet refined construction, making the Macaron a well-considered audio device both technically and aesthetically.
The purpose of the device is to deliver higher-quality digital-to-analog conversion and stronger headphone driving capability than the built-in audio outputs of phones and laptops. The double-sided glass surface, precisely machined aluminum frame, and black, silver, pink, and blue color options give this portable DAC a clean, modern appearance.
At the heart of the iBasso Jr. Macaron is a digital-to-analog conversion system built around two Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC chips. This dual DAC design is especially important in a USB DAC of this size, as it helps reduce distortion, improve dynamic performance, and provide cleaner signal processing for the stereo channels.
The 132 dBA dynamic range and 132 dBA signal-to-noise ratio mean the device can handle subtle details and larger volume changes with very low background noise. The 0.00013% THD+N value measured from the balanced output indicates an extremely low level of distortion, providing the technical foundation for clean, transparent, and accurate sound reproduction.
The Macaron USB-C DAC & AMP supports PCM resolution up to 32 bit / 384 kHz and native DSD256 playback for DSD. This resolution range allows the device to function as a full-featured digital-to-analog converter not only with traditional CD-quality audio, but also with high-resolution music material.
Native DSD support is especially important for music files where the signal is processed without conversion. The Macaron therefore works not merely as a mobile adapter, but as a true portable USB DAC that also meets the technical demands of high-resolution music listening.
In digital audio, clock accuracy directly affects signal timing. The iBasso Jr. Macaron uses a KDS femtosecond crystal oscillator, whose role is to reduce jitter and provide a more stable, more accurate clock signal.
Lower jitter results in cleaner spatial imaging, more precise transient response, and more orderly detail retrieval, which is important for fine micro-details, quiet decays, and more complex musical passages where the accuracy of digital timing plays a significant role in creating a more natural soundstage.
The Macaron’s 4.4 mm balanced output delivers 210 mW + 210 mW at 32 Ohm, providing serious driving reserve for a compact USB DAC and headphone amplifier. This level of power goes well beyond the capabilities of most simple mobile DAC adapters, especially when paired with higher-current earphones or easier-to-drive headphones.
The advantage of the balanced output is not limited to higher power. The symmetrical signal design can also help improve channel separation and create a cleaner signal path. As a result, the Macaron can provide more decisive dynamics, more stable control, and cleaner sound than its size would suggest when paired with suitable headphones or earphones.
The device offers two analog outputs: a 3.5 mm single-ended headphone output and a 4.4 mm balanced headphone output. This design makes the Macaron flexible to use, as it works with traditional headphones and earphones as well as modern models with balanced cabling.
The 3.5 mm output is a practical choice for widely used headphones, while the 4.4 mm balanced connection suits systems built around higher power and cleaner channel handling. Together, the two outputs provide a portable DAC-amplifier solution that can be easily integrated into several types of setups.
The Macaron features physical volume buttons that allow 100-step volume adjustment. This provides more precise control than the larger volume steps typically used by a phone or computer, especially when using sensitive earphones.
The colorful status indicator lights provide clear feedback on operation. The device separately indicates PCM, DSD, and standby status, making it easy to check what type of digital signal is being processed during use.
On Android, the iBasso UAC APP offers additional settings for the Macaron. Through the app, users can access 100-step volume control, three gain levels, two output modes, Turbo and Normal modes, and five digital filters.
The gain setting adjusts amplification for earphones and headphones with different sensitivity levels, while Turbo and Normal modes influence the operating character between performance and power consumption. The 20-step left-right balance adjustment allows fine channel correction, which can be especially useful with sensitive earphones or in cases of asymmetrical hearing.
The iBasso Jr. Macaron can be used with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices, allowing it to integrate with multiple digital sources. The included silver-plated monocrystalline copper USB-C to USB-C cable ensures a high-quality connection between portable devices and the DAC.
The specified 80 mA consumption in Normal mode represents low power demand, which is especially important for mobile use. Lower current draw reduces the load on a phone or tablet battery, while the device is also designed for safe operation with Apple devices.
The iBasso Jr. Macaron USB DAC & AMP combines portability with advanced DAC architecture, high-resolution format support, and a powerful balanced output. Its 16-gram aluminum body, two headphone outputs, physical volume control, and detailed tuning options available on Android make it a thoughtful, modern USB DAC-amplifier.
The Macaron is not just a simple adapter, but a compact digital audio hub capable of producing a clean, high-resolution analog signal from the USB output of a phone, tablet, or computer. The dual CS43131 DAC, KDS femtosecond clock, low distortion, and 4.4 mm balanced output together provide a technical foundation that noticeably raises the quality of portable music listening.
