The EC Zero T MAX integrates a custom R2R DAC, two JAN6418 tubes, an upgraded headphone amplifier, an active magnetic CD clamp and a 5500 mAh battery in a single aluminium chassis. Alongside its 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm headphone outputs, it provides dedicated line outputs, a USB DAC input, Bluetooth transmission and coaxial or optical digital output.

The design is intended to deliver more than portability. It creates a complete, self-contained audio source. The EC Zero T MAX runs from its internal battery on the move and can use external USB-C power at home without placing the battery under direct operating load.

One of the most important upgrades in the MAX version is its new AD8397-based headphone amplifier. The revised circuit provides higher output power and significantly lower output impedance, allowing the player to work with a broader range of loads, from sensitive multi-driver in-ear monitors to full-size headphones.

Shanling also revised the circuitry and power supply surrounding the DAC. The goal was to preserve the full and warm character of the original EC Zero T while expanding the soundstage, improving depth and delivering greater transparency through the midrange and treble.

Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by Shanling’s in-house developed 24-bit R2R network, built from 192 high-precision 0.1% resistors. This architecture differs from conventional Delta-Sigma DAC designs and allows the complete signal-processing chain, power supply and analogue output stage to be tuned as a unified system.

Selectable OS and NOS digital filtering provides two different processing approaches. OS mode applies oversampling, while NOS mode uses a more direct signal path, allowing playback to be matched to the connected system and the listener’s sound preferences.

The analogue stage uses two low-voltage JAN6418 tubes. They are mounted in a custom vibration-damping suspension that reduces vibrations generated by the CD mechanism and portable use, helping to minimise microphonic noise.

The user can switch between tube and transistor output modes. These are not simple digital tone settings, but separate analogue signal paths, so dynamics, tonality, transient response and spatial presentation can all take on a different character.

The 4.4 mm balanced headphone output delivers up to 1300 mW in transistor mode and 1162 mW in tube mode into a 32-ohm load. The 3.5 mm single-ended output provides up to 361 mW, also into 32 ohms.

Maximum output power remains available from the internal battery. Output impedance is 0.4 ohm from the 3.5 mm connection and 0.7 ohm from the 4.4 mm connection, supporting effective matching with low-impedance headphones and sensitive multi-driver IEMs.

The custom CD mechanism uses an active magnetic clamp that continuously stabilises the position and rotation of the disc. The system is designed to reduce unwanted mechanical noise, vibration and playback instability during both portable and desktop use.

Gapless playback handles continuously sequenced tracks without interruption. This is especially important for live albums, classical works, film scores and concept albums, where an artificial pause between tracks would break the musical flow.

The player provides 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm headphone outputs, together with separate 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm line outputs. It can therefore be used directly with headphones, an external headphone amplifier, an integrated amplifier or active speakers.

The combined 3.5 mm SPDIF socket provides coaxial and optical digital output for an external DAC. The Bluetooth 5.3 transmitter supports aptX Adaptive, aptX and SBC, while the USB DAC input accepts PCM up to 768 kHz at 32 bit and DSD512.
