Network Music Player, R2R DAC, Preamplifier and Headphone Amplifier
The Shanling SM1.3R is a high-end desktop network music player that combines a streamer, DAC, preamplifier, headphone amplifier and digital transport in a single component. It can directly manage online music sources, libraries available on the local network, computer playback, USB drives and internal storage. It can be connected to an integrated amplifier, power amplifier, active speakers, headphones or an external DAC, allowing it to replace several separate components in a compact system or serve as a dedicated digital source in a more complex setup.
At the heart of the SM1.3R are Shanling's proprietary second-generation R2R converter, a dual linear power supply, an XMOS XU316 USB interface, dedicated Accusilicon clocks, a MUSES8920 line-output stage and a TPA6120 headphone amplifier. This modern streaming platform is therefore paired with a complete high-resolution audio circuit that provides broad functionality, a carefully designed signal path and a distinctive, natural presentation.
The SM1.3R builds on the functional foundation of the SM1.3. The two models share broadly similar applications, operating logic, networking capabilities, touchscreen interface, internal SSD expansion, analogue outputs, headphone amplification and digital transport functions. Both can serve as complete system hubs, so the key distinction lies not in the number of features, but in the method of digital-to-analogue conversion and the resulting sound character.
The SM1.3 uses an AK4191EQ digital modulator and an AK4499EX delta-sigma DAC, designed for very low distortion, precise outlines and neutral detail retrieval. The SM1.3R instead uses Shanling's proprietary R2R resistor-ladder system. Its tuning targets fuller tonality, smoother decay, more natural texture and a more cohesive musical presentation. The SM1.3R is therefore not simply a successor or update, but a version of the SM1.3 built around a different sonic ideal.
The central element of the SM1.3R is Shanling's second-generation R2R DAC platform. The system is built from 212 resistors with 0.01% precision, which directly generate the analogue voltage levels corresponding to the digital signal. This component-intensive design allows Shanling to define the converter's behaviour at circuit level rather than adapting the product to the sonic character of an off-the-shelf DAC chip.
The 24-bit DAC module uses a 19-bit core architecture, 4-bit compensation coding and a push-pull differential circuit. The compensation corrects minute resistor deviations, while the differential design improves signal linearity, symmetry and noise rejection. According to the manufacturer's specifications, the system can achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of 120 dB and THD+N of 0.003%, combining the natural character of R2R conversion with high technical precision.
The SM1.3R is tuned for musical coherence, natural tonality and balanced long-term listening. Vocals and acoustic instruments can sound fuller and more lifelike in texture, the treble is less prone to sharpness, and decays connect more smoothly. This character is achieved not by suppressing detail, but by presenting it in a less mechanical, more cohesive and natural manner.
Compared with the previous delta-sigma design, the SM1.3R clearly prioritises the character of R2R technology. Its presentation focuses on fuller tonal colours, finer textures, natural decay and musical coherence, while detail, spatial information and dynamics remain precisely traceable.
The SM1.3R uses two 31-watt toroidal transformers. One powers the digital system, processor, display and network modules, while the other supplies the DAC and analogue audio stages. Separating these sections reduces the possibility of electrical noise from high-speed digital circuits entering the sensitive analogue signal path.
The linear power supplies provide a more stable, lower-noise operating environment than a shared switch-mode power supply. The custom potted construction of the toroidal transformers also reduces mechanical resonance. Separate power rails, physical isolation and dedicated analogue power work together to improve background silence, microdynamics and the separation of fine detail.
The SM1.3R uses separate clocks for the 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz sampling-rate families. This allows different music formats to be handled from their native frequency base without unnecessary conversion. Accurate timing is also important for stable stereo imaging, focused transients and the clarity of fine detail.
The 45.1584 MHz and 49.152 MHz Accusilicon clocks provide separate reference signals for the DAC and USB system. Using two clock families reduces timing uncertainty and supports more consistent digital processing, particularly with high-resolution PCM and DSD material.
Connected to a computer, the SM1.3R operates as a full-featured USB DAC. The XMOS XU316 interface receives, buffers and precisely clocks the incoming audio data before passing it directly to the R2R converter. This allows the unit to replace the computer's built-in audio output and function as a high-quality desktop source.
The USB audio path supports PCM up to 32-bit / 768 kHz and native DSD512. The XMOS controller, dedicated clocks and Shanling AGLO system work together to process the digital signal as directly and accurately as possible. Broad format support allows the SM1.3R to handle sources ranging from conventional lossless files to high-resolution studio recordings.
The SM1.3R is designed to deliver the music data stream to the DAC without unnecessary modification. Shanling's AGLO solution bypasses general system-level resampling, allowing files of different resolutions to be processed at their native sampling rates.
This is particularly important when the unit plays high-resolution music from a built-in application, local storage or a network source. Material at 44.1 kHz, 96 kHz or 192 kHz can reach the DAC at its original frequency, keeping the digital audio path predictable and consistent.
The SM1.3R uses a 64-bit ARM Cortex-A55-based Rockchip processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. This hardware manages the graphical interface, network communication, music library, storage devices and supported playback functions. The system delivers fast menu navigation, efficient handling of larger libraries and smooth operation.
The closed system platform is optimised for audio playback rather than general-purpose computing. It focuses on playback, source selection, library management and control while reducing unnecessary background processes. The result is more consistent operation and a more predictable audio path.
The front panel features a 5.8-inch Sharp touchscreen with 1080p resolution. Its large display clearly presents album artwork, playback information, the music library, inputs, outputs and system settings. The SM1.3R can therefore be operated fully without a phone or computer.
Physical buttons and a large rotary control are also provided alongside the display. The interface uses large icons, directly accessible key functions and a clear menu structure. The physical controls provide immediate access to essential operations, while the touchscreen supports detailed browsing and configuration.
The SM1.3R can receive music directly from the internet or the local network. Playback does not have to pass through a phone's Bluetooth connection, as the unit itself downloads or reads the music data. A phone or tablet can act only as a controller, keeping playback more stable and less dependent on the mobile device.
The system supports network streaming, Connect-based control, Roon integration, DLNA transmission, AirPlay and access to network folders. Online music libraries, collections stored on a NAS and local files can all be managed from the same device, eliminating the need for separate source components.
Roon Ready support allows the SM1.3R to operate as a network endpoint within a Roon-based music system. The music library, metadata, album information and multi-room playback can be managed through the Roon interface, while the audio data is delivered directly to the Shanling.
The unit's network architecture also integrates easily into more complex systems. It can operate as a dedicated source alongside a central NAS, wired network and multiple players, while retaining access to its own touchscreen and mobile control options.
The SM1.3R includes an internal M.2 NVMe 3.0 SSD slot, allowing an entire music collection to be stored directly inside the unit. The internal drive provides fast access, silent operation and a tidy installation without requiring a permanent network connection or separate external storage. Music stored on the SSD is managed within the SM1.3R's own library and can be browsed from the touchscreen or remotely. The drive can be installed separately, allowing storage capacity to be matched to the size of the music collection.
USB storage devices can also be connected alongside the internal SSD, including flash drives, external SSDs and suitably powered hard drives. This allows an existing music collection to be accessed directly without copying files or configuring a network share. The unit supports commonly used lossless, compressed and high-resolution formats, while local files can be browsed by folder, album, artist and library. High-resolution PCM and DSD material is played directly through the unit's internal audio path.
The rear-panel Gigabit Ethernet port provides a stable wired network connection. This is particularly beneficial for high-resolution files, NAS playback and multi-room systems. A wired connection is less sensitive to radio interference and changes in the wireless network environment.
The dual-band Wi-Fi 6 module supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. The 2.4 GHz band can provide longer range, while 5 GHz can offer higher speeds and lower congestion. External antennas support stable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth operation.
The Bluetooth input is handled by a Qualcomm QCC5125 module. It provides a fast, direct connection for a phone, tablet or computer when a network library or dedicated playback infrastructure is not required. Bluetooth primarily serves as a convenient input alongside the wired and network sources.
Supported codecs include LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, aptX, AAC and SBC. The system automatically uses a codec supported by both the source device and the SM1.3R. LDAC and aptX HD can provide higher data rates, while aptX Adaptive can adjust its operation to connection conditions.
The Eddict Controller app provides remote access to playback, the music library and essential functions. Users can browse music, change tracks and control playback from the listening position without approaching the unit.
Full screen mirroring displays the SM1.3R's own interface on a mobile device. It also provides remote access to detailed system settings, inputs, outputs and compatible applications. Mobile and on-device control therefore use the same interface.
The SM1.3R provides RCA and balanced XLR analogue outputs, allowing connection to an integrated amplifier, preamplifier, active speakers or power amplifier. The outputs can operate at fixed line level or in variable preamplifier mode, so volume can be controlled by the connected amplifier or directly from the SM1.3R.
The line-output stage is based on a MUSES8920 circuit, while the front-panel 6.35 mm headphone output is driven by a separate TPA6120 amplifier. The isolated signal paths provide a stable, low-noise analogue output and allow the SM1.3R to function as a complete desktop headphone system.
