Network switch optimized for audio systems
The Gustard N18 Pro is a Gigabit Ethernet switch specifically designed for audio systems, complementing conventional data transmission with audiophile-focused hardware solutions. In systems featuring a streamer, network player, Roon setup, NAS, or other Ethernet-based audio equipment, it serves as a stable network connection point where power supply, network interfaces, and clock management all receive particular attention.
The N18 Pro supports adaptive 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connectivity and allows significantly more wired endpoints to be connected than the standard N18 model. The Pro version features LAN ports optimized specifically for audio devices, an SFP interface, and an external 10 MHz clock input, enabling it to serve as a central network component in more complex hi-fi systems.
The rear panel clearly separates the network-side connections from those designated for audio devices. The former provides one Ethernet port and one SFP slot, while the latter offers four RJ45 Ethernet ports specifically optimized for audio use, allowing the N18 Pro to integrate multiple network devices into a single system.
One of the key features of the N18 Pro is its SFP slot. With a suitable module and optical cabling, the electrical continuity of a copper-based Ethernet connection can be broken, reducing the transmission of conducted electrical interference.
In addition to 1000Base-X connectivity, the SFP interface supports GPON/EPON optical modems, SFP RJ45 extenders, and SFP optical modules; however, the SFP module and LC-LC optical cable required for optical isolation are sold separately.
Unlike the standard model, the N18 Pro can also accept an external 10 MHz reference clock, allowing the switch to be seamlessly integrated into digital audio systems equipped with a 10 MHz master clock.
A built-in linear power supply provides power for stable operation of the network switch electronics, aiming to create a stable, low-noise operating environment for the network circuitry.
The power supply uses an audio-grade toroidal transformer, a high-current, low-voltage-drop rectifier bridge, Nichicon capacitors, and multi-stage filtering. Separate, multi-stage regulated power rails supply the individual circuit sections, reducing power-supply ripple and unwanted interaction between the various functional stages.
A distinctive element of the N18 Pro is its dual network switch architecture. The device employs two network switch stages connected in series, creating a two-stage network structure.
The two-stage design is one of the key differences between the N18 Pro and a conventional Ethernet switch based on a single switching stage. The two network stages connected in series form part of the device's internal architecture, while the Pro model provides four LAN connections designated for audio devices.
The N18 Pro can be used independently between a router and network audio components. Its four audio LAN ports allow multiple streamers, network bridges, or other Ethernet-enabled hi-fi components to be connected simultaneously, while the network-side connection uses a separate port.
The device can also be connected in series with another N18-series network switch via SFP. In this configuration, the electrical isolation provided by the optical link between the two devices reduces the transmission of electrical noise toward the audio system connected to the second device.
The N18 Pro is styled to integrate naturally into an audio system as a hi-fi component. Rear-mounted connections allow tidy cabling, while the clearly grouped network ports help make system setup quick and well organized.
