CelWare Audio OS is at the core of the S26's operation. It not only manages the music library, but also coordinates playback and audio data transmission. CelPlayer can be controlled through both its dedicated application and web interface, making it easy to manage the music library and playback from a variety of devices.

CelPlayer plays audio data directly from memory through in-memory playback and reduces data transfer latency through direct memory writing. In server mode, CelPlayer, Roon Server, and UPnP Server functions are available, while bridge mode supports Roon Bridge, UPnP/DLNA Renderer, HQPlayer NAA, and AirPlay, making the S26 easy to integrate into a wide range of network audio ecosystems.

The S26 is not built around a general-purpose computer motherboard. Its design prioritizes functions relevant to audio playback, while unnecessary hardware components have been omitted to simplify the system. The power supply, vibration control, and heat dissipation have also been tailored to this specific operating environment.

The dedicated motherboard, isolated power supply sections, and passive cooling system work together to reduce electrical and mechanical interference within the digital processing environment.

The S26 is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 5600U processor. Based on the Zen 3 architecture, it features six processor cores and twelve processing threads, with a base clock speed of 2.3 GHz and a maximum turbo clock of 4.2 GHz. This performance provides a stable hardware foundation for CelWare Audio OS, music library management, and the various playback and server functions.

The 7 nm manufacturing process and the 10 W TDP configuration used in the S26 also support energy-efficient operation. Low heat generation enables fully passive cooling, allowing the processor to deliver the computing performance expected from a music server without fan noise or the resulting mechanical vibrations.

In a music server, cooling affects more than just the processor's operating temperature. Fans can generate mechanical vibrations, while PWM-based control can introduce additional electromagnetic noise, so the S26 uses a fully passive, fanless cooling system.

The S26's power supply differs from the solutions typically used in conventional computer-based music servers. Its 120 VA linear power supply feeds multiple electrically isolated circuit zones. This is particularly important in a system where the processor, network interface, clock generation, and digital audio outputs operate under different load and noise conditions.

The power supply is built around a custom, hermetically sealed 120 VA audio-grade toroidal transformer with oxygen-free copper windings. It uses two rectifier bridges fitted with metal heat sinks, a total capacitance of up to 40,800 µF, and separate regulation stages. Individual circuit sections are powered by ultra-low-noise, high-current LDO regulators. The isolated power sections are intended to reduce mutual electrical interference between the different digital circuits.

One of the key elements of the S26's digital architecture is its shared clock system. Synchronizing the timing of the PCIe buses, network interface, USB, and digital audio interfaces reduces the risk of different digital sections operating from independent timing references.

The Global Clock Synchronization system is based on a common clock source, with the GCLK-02 clock module at its core. The module's PLL technology enables clock locking with 1 Hz accuracy, while its feedback control stabilizes frequency and phase relationships. The unified timing architecture extends to the FPGA-based digital audio output section, PCIe audio controller, network interface, and the decoder units of the external interfaces.

The S26 offers multiple digital connection options, allowing it to be used with DACs and digital audio devices featuring different input configurations. The rear panel provides USB Audio, IIS-G, configurable IIS, AES, coaxial, and optical digital outputs.

For PCM signals, the IIS interface supports sampling rates from 44.1 to 768 kHz and resolutions from 16 to 32 bits. Native DSD transmission supports DSD64 to DSD512, while DoP supports DSD64 to DSD256. The AES, coaxial, and optical outputs transmit 44.1 to 192 kHz, 16 to 24-bit PCM signals. They do not support native DSD, but DSD64 transmission is possible in DoP mode.

The two IIS connectors offer different options for system integration. IIS-G uses Gustard's fixed protocol, while the pin assignment of the other IIS interface can be changed through the application or web interface. This makes pairing easier with DACs that use different HDMI-based IIS pinouts.

The configurable IIS output offers two selectable pin assignment modes. The DATA/DSD, BCLK/DSDCLK, LRCK/DSDR, and MCLK signals, as well as the DSD flag assignment, can be adapted to the required protocol, while the fixed IIS-G output uses Gustard's proprietary pinout.

The S26 includes a built-in 1 TB SSD for local music library storage. The server manages music files directly from the internal drive, while content from external USB storage devices can be copied to the internal storage.

The built-in drive is an M.2 NVMe SSD using TLC 3D NAND memory. An additional M.2 NVMe expansion slot is also available, supporting PCIe 3.0 x4, 2280-format SSDs with capacities of up to 4 TB.

The S26's primary role is to create the most stable possible electrical and timing environment for the DAC. Fanless operation, the linear power supply, isolated LDO power sections, the shared clock system, and dedicated digital interfaces all contribute to delivering digital audio data to the DAC under stable conditions.

From a technical perspective, the GCLK-02's PLL-based synchronization, power rails with noise levels below 5 µV, PCIe-based digital interfaces, and passive cooling are intended to reduce noise, jitter sources, and interference between system components. However, the audible result is also influenced by the connected DAC, the selected digital output, the clocking configuration, and the overall system architecture.
