The Musician Audio Aquarius is a fully balanced, high-precision R2R DAC that combines the advantages of classic ladder conversion with modern digital signal processing and wide format support. Its design focus is not solely on maximizing technical specifications, but on achieving a more natural, musically coherent and long-term enjoyable reproduction from digital signals. The Aquarius is a device that, while preserving detail, places emphasis on tonal balance, faithful dynamics reproduction and the creation of musical continuity.
The fully balanced R2R architecture, custom-developed digital processing, high-precision clock system and linear power supply create a foundation that enables refined and high-resolution reproduction of digital recordings. The Aquarius does not approach digital playback from a sterile analytical direction, but instead offers a character in which detail richness, natural tonality and musical coherence all play an equally important role.
The foundation of the Aquarius sound is the Musician Audio True Balanced R2R architecture. Each channel is equipped with a dedicated high-speed FPGA controller that manages the operation of four separate, extremely precise R2R resistor networks with 0.005% tolerance. This level of precision not only results in lower distortion and improved linearity, but also contributes to a cleaner background and a more natural sound presentation: instrument outlines are drawn more stably, vocals appear with greater presence, while the overall sound image maintains continuity and coherence. One of the key advantages of R2R technology here is that musical information is not broken down into fragmented elements, but presented as a unified, organic whole, resulting in a naturally effortless listening experience even during long sessions.
The Aquarius uses four extremely tightly matched R2R resistor networks per channel with 0.005% tolerance, which play a decisive role in conversion accuracy. This level of component matching enables even the smallest level differences in the digital signal to be reproduced with high precision on the analog side, resulting not only in lower distortion but also in more accurate reproduction of fine musical information. Instrument textures unfold in a more nuanced way, decay behaves more naturally, while low-level details remain easier to follow. As a result, the sound appears richer, more layered and more balanced in tone.
The core of digital processing is based on an ALTERA FPGA platform, responsible for managing the digital data stream, filtering and controlling the conversion process. Musician’s custom-developed digital filters operate in 16x oversampling mode, while each filter stage works with 32-bit input resolution. This advanced signal processing solution delivers higher dynamic contrast, more precise detail retrieval and more refined timbres, while maintaining a natural sonic character. The soundstage becomes more open, musical events are more easily separated, transients appear more clearly, and the overall presentation becomes airier and more informative.
The Aquarius uses a proprietary R2R + DSD architecture that combines a true balanced 24-bit R2R system with a dedicated DSD processing unit and 32-stage FIR filters. The system is designed to ensure that both PCM and DSD formats are processed at a high level while maintaining precision and stability throughout the digital signal path. The design is complemented by a FIFO buffer, which helps isolate timing uncertainties of incoming data streams from the DAC’s internal operation. The audible result is a more organized soundstage, improved focus and clearer unfolding of musical details, especially in high-resolution recordings.
One of the most important factors in digital audio is precise timing, therefore the Aquarius uses a dual crystal oscillator design to serve different sampling frequencies. The more stable clock significantly reduces jitter, which has a direct impact on sound clarity and spatial accuracy. Lower timing error results in a more stable soundstage, more precise instrument positioning and more natural transients. Instrument outlines become more defined, depth perception improves, while the overall presentation maintains a calm and controlled character.
The Aquarius is powered by a linear power supply that uses an O-type transformer housed in a thick metal enclosure. The design aims to provide stable voltage and effectively isolate digital circuit noise from the sensitive conversion stages. This low-noise power design not only improves technical performance, but is also reflected in the calmness and clarity of the sound. The background becomes quieter, dynamic differences are easier to perceive, and the low-frequency range appears with greater control and stability.
The Aquarius offers wide format support for modern digital sources. Through USB and I2S inputs, it is capable of handling up to PCM 1536 kHz and DSD1024, while all digital inputs support standard PCM formats and DSD64 DoP playback.
The device offers both NOS and OS modes, allowing users to choose between a more direct, minimal-processing sound and a digitally filtered optimized presentation. The high processing capacity is not only a compatibility advantage, but also a digital infrastructure capable of handling the highest-resolution musical material.
The device provides full digital connectivity via USB, AES/EBU, optical, coaxial and two separate I2S inputs, making it easy to integrate with network players, computers or dedicated digital audio sources. The I2S connection is particularly flexible, as the device offers eight different phase modes to handle various HDMI-based I2S pin layouts from different manufacturers.
On the analog side, both RCA and XLR outputs are available, however simultaneous use is not recommended by the manufacturer. As the Aquarius is a true balanced DAC, the full benefits of its architecture are primarily realized through the XLR output, which provides higher signal level and optimal performance for compatible systems.
The sound of the Aquarius is defined by natural tonality, a clean background and a high level of detail. The precise R2R conversion and low-noise design allow instruments to appear with richer harmonic structure, vocals with greater presence and fine details in a more natural form. The reproduction does not become sterile or overly analytical; instead, it emphasizes musical continuity, faithful reproduction of textures and a long-term enjoyable character.
Advanced digital processing, FIFO buffering, precise clocking and low-noise power supply together create a soundstage in which space is well organized, instrument positioning is stable and details remain easy to follow.
