Fully Balanced Headphone Amplifier and Preamplifier
The AUDALYTIC HP70 is a fully balanced headphone amplifier and preamplifier designed for use with analog audio sources. It does not include an internal DAC, making it suitable for pairing with external digital-to-analog converters or other analog signal sources. The design focuses on discrete amplification, Class A operation, and precise volume control, positioning the device as a central component in a desktop or home audio system.
The HP70 features a fully balanced signal processing architecture from input to output. It supports both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs while maintaining a consistent signal path throughout the device.
Its amplification stage is based on a discrete component design, referred to as a “Fully Balanced Discrete” architecture. This approach relies on individual components rather than integrated amplifier solutions.
The amplifier operates in Class A topology, a core characteristic consistently documented for this model. Volume control is implemented through a relay-controlled R-2R resistor ladder, allowing precise level adjustments and stable channel balance.
Adjustable gain settings are available within a 0 dB to 28 dB range, providing flexibility for different headphones and system configurations.
The front panel includes both a 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn output and a 6.35 mm single-ended headphone output. On the input side, the device provides two pairs of RCA inputs and one pair of balanced XLR inputs, each with defined electrical parameters.
The HP70 can also function as a standalone preamplifier, thanks to its RCA and balanced XLR preamp outputs, enabling direct connection to power amplifiers or active speakers.
The amplifier delivers approximately 2000 mW at 32 ohms from the balanced 4.4 mm output. The frequency response spans from 20 Hz to 40 kHz within a ±0.1 dB range.
Signal-to-noise ratio reaches 122 dB on the XLR preamp output and 120 dB on the headphone output. Total harmonic distortion and intermodulation distortion values remain low under specified conditions, with excellent channel separation and low output impedance supporting stable performance across a range of headphones.
The HP70 includes a front-panel display showing volume level, input selection and menu settings. Control is centered around a rotary push knob for volume adjustment, input switching and menu navigation. A remote control is included, allowing adjustment of volume, input selection, mute, standby and menu functions.
The chassis is made of aluminum and is available in black and silver finishes. Its compact dimensions are 220 × 170 × 50 mm, with a net weight of 1600 grams.
The unit uses an internal AC power supply supporting 115 V or 230 V at 50/60 Hz. It also supports an external DC power source within a 15–18 V range.
