Premium Portable USB-C HiFi DAC and Headphone Amplifier
The iBasso Jr. Macchiato is a compact yet remarkably powerful portable USB DAC and headphone amplifier that raises digital music listening to a higher level when connected to a smartphone, tablet, computer or game console. The device works as the central element of a modern portable HiFi system: it converts the digital signal into analog sound with high precision, then delivers it through a stable, powerful headphone output.
The Macchiato’s CNC-machined aluminum body and tempered glass panel design give it a premium feel, while its compact size preserves the advantages of everyday portability. Available in pink, blue and black, the device’s clean design fits naturally with modern mobile devices and desktop systems alike.
The sound processing of the iBasso Jr. Macchiato is built around two Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC chips. This dual DAC configuration enables more precise handling of the left and right channels, a cleaner signal path and more stable dynamic behavior, which can offer an audible advantage with high-resolution music material and sensitive earphones.
The DAC section supports high-resolution playback up to PCM 32-bit / 384 kHz and native DSD256. This provides wide format compatibility and allows the Macchiato to function not merely as a simple mobile sound card, but as a true portable HiFi DAC.
Behind the 4.4 mm balanced output is a fully balanced four-channel amplifier stage. This design provides higher output voltage, better channel separation and more stable drive than a conventional single-ended output. The 4.4 mm balanced connection delivers 580 mW + 580 mW at 32 ohms, an outstanding value from a USB dongle-sized DAC device.
The 5 Vrms output voltage also plays an important role when driving larger headphones, because the system provides not only volume, but also more controlled dynamics and more stable signal transmission. The 132 dB dynamic range and 131 dB signal-to-noise ratio enable a clean, detailed presentation, while the -118 dB THD+N value indicates extremely low-distortion operation.
Alongside the balanced output, the Macchiato also features a 3.5 mm single-ended headphone output that provides 195 mW + 195 mW at 32 ohms, making it ideal for earphones and headphones equipped with a traditional 3.5 mm connector.
The 3.5 mm output can also be used as an SPDIF digital output up to 32-bit / 384 kHz resolution. This allows the Macchiato to be integrated not only as a DAC and headphone amplifier, but also as a compact digital transport in systems where an external DAC or an amplifier with a digital input processes the signal.
Both headphone outputs operate with an output impedance below 0.05 ohms. This is especially important for low-impedance, multi-driver IEMs, as it helps preserve the stability of the frequency response and reduces the chance that the character of the source will alter the earphone’s tuning in an unwanted way.
The low output impedance provides more precise drive and better control, particularly in the bass range. The nanovolt-level noise floor also results in a clean background with sensitive in-ear monitors, which can make a meaningful difference when listening to quiet details, decays and fine spatial information.
The sonic character of the iBasso Jr. Macchiato is built on the dual CS43131 DAC, the low-distortion amplifier stage and the wide dynamic range. The bass range is capable of a controlled, fast and tight presentation, as the amplifier’s high power reserve and low output impedance maintain stable control over the connected headphones or earphones.
The clarity of the midrange is supported by the low noise floor and precise digital clock management, allowing vocals and acoustic instruments to appear with more natural contours. Treble detail is supported by high-resolution PCM and DSD compatibility, as well as digital processing designed for low jitter. In terms of spatial impression and separation, the balanced output is especially beneficial, as it can provide better channel separation and a more stable stereo image.
The Macchiato uses dual femtosecond crystal oscillators, responsible for the accuracy of digital signal timing. Reducing jitter, meaning timing inaccuracy, plays an important role in helping the sound emerge with cleaner contours, more precise transient response and a more stable stereo image.
Precise clock management is especially important with high-resolution material, where fine details, micro-dynamic changes and spatial information reveal more about the quality of the digital chain. In this area, the Macchiato behaves not as a simple accessory, but as a serious portable audio device.
The 0.96-inch OLED display shows important operating information in real time, so volume, gain, digital filter, channel balance and other settings can be monitored directly. This makes operation more convenient, as the Macchiato does not rely solely on the software interface of the connected device.
The 100-step volume control operated by physical buttons allows fine adjustment, which is useful with both sensitive IEMs and larger headphones. The 20-step left-right channel balance adjustment provides precise stereo correction, which is especially important when the earphones, headphones or listening environment cause slight asymmetry.
The three gain levels allow the Macchiato to operate in the appropriate range with earphones and headphones of different sensitivities. Lower gain can provide cleaner volume control and a lower perceived noise level with sensitive IEMs, while higher gain gives greater power reserve for harder-to-drive headphones.
The five digital filters, Fast, Slow, LL/F, LL/S and NOS, offer different digital filtering characteristics. These settings can subtly modify transient response, the perception of decays and the behavior of the treble range. Dynamic Range Enhancement, or DRE modes, are designed for fine-tuning the sense of dynamics, giving the Macchiato broader personalization alongside its technical performance.
The iBasso Jr. Macchiato supports both UAC1.0 and UAC2.0 protocols, so it can be used with Android, iOS, Windows, Mac and Linux systems. This dual USB Audio Class compatibility is especially valuable because, in addition to modern high-resolution playback, it also works with devices that have more limited USB audio support.
Game console use is completed by compatibility with Switch 2 and PS5. In this environment, the Macchiato can provide not only better sound quality, but also cleaner detail, more precise spatial perception and more stable headphone drive compared with built-in audio outputs.
The CNC aluminum body gives the Macchiato a rigid, durable and elegant exterior, while the tempered glass panels add a premium visual character to the device. The compact form preserves the most important advantage of a portable USB DAC: the Macchiato takes up very little space, yet offers full DAC and headphone amplifier functionality.
The pink, blue and black colors give the device different visual characters, allowing its appearance to match the mobile or desktop devices used alongside its technical performance. The Macchiato offers a quality step from the convenience-focused world of TWS solutions toward wired HiFi listening, with higher power, more precise signal processing and broader control options.
