Q2 is aimed at the listener who wants more than a phone dongle, but does not need the size and complexity of a larger app-driven portable player. Its focus is simple: dedicated music playback, pocket-friendly dimensions and enough output flexibility to work with both sensitive IEMs and a useful range of headphones.

Technically, it occupies the compact MTouch side of Shanling’s range. The operating system remains focused on audio rather than general-purpose applications, while the quad-DAC architecture, 4.4 mm balanced output, line outputs, Wi-Fi functions and digital transport modes move it well beyond an entry-level player.

Q2 may look friendly and compact, but Shanling did not treat it as a lifestyle player with only basic audio hardware. Four Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC chips form the core of the conversion stage, giving the player a serious foundation for detailed, low-distortion playback.

The four-DAC implementation supports a fully balanced signal path and high-resolution playback up to PCM 768 kHz / 32-bit and DSD512. Shanling specifies up to 130 dB signal-to-noise ratio and 0.0006% THD+N from the 4.4 mm balanced headphone output.

At 80 × 50 × 13.5 mm and only 83 grams, Q2 is Shanling’s second-smallest player. The key point is that the size reduction does not remove the connections serious listeners actually use: both 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced headphone outputs are built directly into the chassis.

The 3.5 mm output reaches 120 mW @ 32 Ω in high gain, while the 4.4 mm balanced output reaches 425 mW @ 32 Ω. Low gain and a precise 100-step volume system make the same player suitable for sensitive IEMs, while high gain extends its usefulness to more demanding portable and selected full-size headphones.

Q2 combines three interaction methods instead of forcing every task onto the touchscreen. The 2.09-inch display handles menus and library browsing, the circular touch wheel gives fast volume access, and four physical buttons keep essential playback commands available without looking at the screen.

The screen uses a 320 × 375 resolution, while the control system is designed around both direct touch operation and blind in-pocket use. Buttons and wheel can also be locked when the screen is off, helping prevent accidental commands during daily carry.

Q2 deliberately avoids becoming a miniature smartphone. Shanling’s MTouch OS keeps the interface focused on music, local libraries and audio connectivity, making the player quicker to understand and less distracting during normal use.

The latest MTouch generation runs on the Ingenic X2000 processor and builds on more than eight years of Shanling development. It provides the foundation for local playback, Wi-Fi functions, Bluetooth operation, TIDAL integration, digital transport features and remote control through the Eddict Player companion app.

Q2 can send music wirelessly to Bluetooth headphones and speakers, but it can also reverse the connection and work as a Bluetooth DAC/amp for a smartphone. That makes it useful even when the music does not originate from its own MicroSD card.

Two-way Bluetooth 5.2 supports LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC. In practical system terms, Q2 can therefore act as either a wireless source or a wireless receiving endpoint, extending its role beyond conventional standalone player use.

The return of the Q line is no longer limited to a purely offline music library. Connect Q2 to Wi-Fi and TIDAL can be accessed directly on the player, allowing local files and on-demand streaming to coexist on one compact device.

The TIDAL implementation was developed in cooperation between Shanling and TIDAL. It supports online playback only, so offline TIDAL downloads are not available on Q2, but the integration still represents a major expansion of the small dedicated-player concept.

For listeners who still want to own and carry a local music library, Q2 includes a MicroSD card slot with support for capacities up to 2 TB. That gives the player enough room for anything from a carefully selected travel collection to a very large high-resolution archive.

Tag-based music library browsing supports up to 20,000 files, while folder browsing is unlimited. Q2 supports a broad range of PCM, DSD and compressed formats, so local playback remains one of the strongest parts of the platform rather than a secondary feature.

Q2 can become more than a self-contained player. Connect it to a Windows or Mac computer and it can operate as an external USB DAC. Connect an external DAC or compatible USB-C headphones in the opposite direction and Q2 can become the digital source.

USB DAC operation supports up to PCM 384 kHz / 32-bit. As a USB Audio transport, the player can send a bit-perfect digital signal downstream, allowing its MTouch interface, local storage and wireless receiving functions to remain useful even when conversion is handled by another device.

Q2 can sit between different devices instead of working only as the final playback source. It can receive audio over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and then pass that signal onward through USB or Bluetooth, creating several practical combinations for desktop, portable and wireless systems.

Shanling lists routing examples including DLNA/AirPlay to Q2 to USB DAC, DLNA/AirPlay to Q2 to Bluetooth speaker, Bluetooth to Q2 to USB DAC and USB input to Q2 to Bluetooth speaker. For DLNA and AirPlay, Q2 serves as an endpoint and a computer or phone remains the controller.

A compact player only works as an everyday device if it can stay away from the charger. Q2’s 1850 mAh battery is designed around commuting, travel and normal daily listening rather than short demonstration sessions.

Shanling specifies up to 13.5 hours through the 3.5 mm single-ended output, 12.5 hours through the 4.4 mm balanced output and 16.5 hours in LDAC Bluetooth use. Actual runtime varies with screen activity, output power and file resolution.
