PCM conversion is handled by the DR80’s proprietary 26-bit complementary discrete R-2R module. Its ladder network of precision resistors generates the analog signal directly from the digital code. Closely matched resistors and a carefully engineered circuit layout ensure accurate operation.

DSD uses a dedicated signal path: in DIRECT DSD mode, the bitstream is sent straight to the true 1-bit switch matrix without intermediate PCM conversion. The DAC processes native DSD up to DSD1024 via USB and DSD2048 through its IIS/I2S input.

A programmable FPGA sits at the heart of the digital processing architecture. It manages clocking, digital signal conditioning and DoP demodulation while controlling noise-free switching between PCM and DSD operation. Its purpose-built logic prepares each input format for the appropriate conversion mode.

USB connectivity is handled by a customized GUSTARD and Amanero interface built around the ARM Cortex-M7-based i.MX RT1011 controller. The CK01 femtosecond clock module provides precise timing for high-resolution audio streams.

The comprehensive input section accommodates sources ranging from computers to CD transports and dedicated digital transports. Alongside USB-B, coaxial and optical inputs, the DR80 includes an HDMI-style IIS/I2S connector. IIS/I2S supports PCM up to 32-bit/1536 kHz and native DSD2048, while USB handles PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD1024.

Wireless sources can connect through Bluetooth 5.1 based on the Qualcomm QCC5125 platform. Support for LDAC, AAC, SBC, aptX, aptX LL and aptX HD ensures compatibility with a wide range of mobile devices and Bluetooth sources.

Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs allow the DR80 to connect to integrated amplifiers, preamplifiers, headphone amplifiers and powered speakers. Both outputs can remain active simultaneously, allowing the signal to be routed to two downstream components in parallel.

The low-output-impedance analog stage maintains stable operation with different input loads. The built-in analog volume control enables precise level adjustment, while direct bypass mode bypasses the volume-control stage and delivers a fixed-level signal.

In OS mode, the DR80 analog stage delivers a frequency response of 20 Hz–20 kHz within ±0.2 dB. Dynamic range exceeds 114 dB, signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 115 dB, and THD+N is no more than 0.003% at 1 kHz.

Crosstalk between the left and right channels is below −134 dB at 1 kHz, while EN IMD is approximately 0.009% at a 0 dBFS signal level. These figures demonstrate the low distortion and strong channel separation of the analog output stage.

The power supply uses segmented filtering and multi-rail voltage regulation, providing separate power rails for individual circuit sections. This architecture reduces interaction between the digital and analog stages as well as internal circuit crosstalk.

The DR80 can operate from its built-in low-noise AC power supply or an external 12–15 V DC power supply rated for at least 2 A. The anodized aluminum chassis is available in black or silver, and power consumption remains below 12 W.

An LCD display with adjustable brightness and touch-sensitive front-panel controls simplify everyday operation. Alongside the standby button, minus, settings and plus buttons provide direct access to essential functions, and the display can dim automatically.

The included infrared remote allows the DAC to be controlled from the listening position. The rear panel logically groups the digital inputs, analog outputs, Bluetooth antenna connector, firmware update port, AC inlet and external DC power connector.
