The TOPPING L70 is a fully balanced desktop headphone amplifier and analogue preamplifier built around NFCA amplifier modules. It combines high output power, low noise and a relay-based R2R volume control in a compact aluminium enclosure.

AN ANALOGUE HUB FOR HEADPHONES AND ACTIVE SYSTEMS

The L70 sits after a DAC or other analogue source and drives headphones while precisely controlling the signal level. It does not include a built-in DAC or digital inputs, so it forms a complete system with a separate USB DAC, network player or other line-level source.

The unit accepts Combo XLR/TRS and RCA inputs, and can operate as a headphone amplifier, a preamplifier or both at the same time. Output mode, volume and gain settings can be stored individually for up to eight output configurations.

TOPPING L70 NFCA headphone amplifier module — NFCA, or Nested Feedback Composite Amplifier, combines voltage and current feedback within a single amplifier architecture.

NFCA MODULES FOR HIGH CURRENT DELIVERY AND LOW SELF-NOISE

The L70 uses the NFCA headphone amplifier modules familiar from the A90 family. The design is intended to provide stable drive for both low- and high-impedance headphones, while keeping background noise restrained with sensitive earphones.

The NFCA design combines hybrid voltage and current feedback with the UHGF, Ultra High Gain Feedback, principle. According to the manufacturer, the balanced output can achieve up to 146 dB of dynamic range under favourable signal conditions, while actual noise remains below 0.3 µVrms at low gain and output impedance stays below 0.2 Ω.

THREE HEADPHONE OUTPUTS, BROAD COMPATIBILITY

The front panel provides 4-pin XLR and 4.4 mm balanced connections alongside a 6.35 mm single-ended output. With the supplied adapter, headphones and earphones fitted with a 3.5 mm single-ended plug can also be used, covering the most common home headphone connections.

The balanced output is specified for up to 52 Vpp and 1.4 A peak current, while the single-ended output is specified for up to 26 Vpp. The low output impedance helps reduce the likelihood of a low-impedance headphone's impedance curve interacting with the amplifier and significantly altering frequency response.

HIGH POWER WITH LOW DISTORTION

The L70's balanced output delivers up to 2 × 7500 mW at 32 Ω, providing substantial headroom for demanding planar magnetic and dynamic headphones. Its single-ended output is specified at 2 × 2300 mW at 32 Ω, which is ample for most conventional headphones.

The manufacturer's data sheet specifies a best-case THD+N figure below 0.000055% at 300 Ω and 80 mW, measured from a single-ended input to a balanced output. These figures are linked to specific measurement conditions, but indicate an amplifier designed for low self-noise and distortion alongside its power reserves.

TWO GAIN LEVELS AND RELAY-BASED R2R VOLUME CONTROL

The L70 offers two gain settings, so sensitive IEMs and headphones that require more power can be handled by the same unit. Low gain allows finer adjustment over a wider usable volume range, while high gain provides more voltage and power headroom.

Gain is 6.0 or 19.8 dB through the balanced headphone output and 0 or 13.8 dB through the single-ended output. Volume control uses a relay-based resistor ladder R2R design, intended by TOPPING to provide precise steps, good channel balance and stable long-term operation.

The L70 is not only for headphone listening. In preamplifier mode, its volume control also acts on the RCA and XLR line outputs, allowing direct connection to active speakers or a power amplifier and centralised volume control for the system.

Preamplifier output impedance is 20 Ω via RCA and 40 Ω via XLR, providing suitable matching for the inputs of most modern power amplifiers and active speakers. The output menu separately selects the three headphone outputs, RCA, XLR, both line outputs together, or simultaneous headphone and preamplifier operation.

Start at a low volume in preamplifier mode

Before connecting active speakers or a power amplifier, set the volume to minimum and increase it gradually. The variable signal level of the line outputs directly affects the volume of the following amplification stage.

XLR, TRS AND RCA INPUTS IN ONE UNIT

The rear Combo connectors accept both XLR and 6.35 mm TRS plugs, with conventional RCA inputs alongside. This makes it easy to connect a DAC, phono preamplifier or other analogue source, even where balanced and single-ended components are combined in the same system.

The fully balanced amplifier architecture handles the differential signal path from input through to the balanced headphone and XLR preamplifier outputs. It can also be used with a single-ended source, though for the potential benefits of balanced connection, the source, cable and downstream component must all support the appropriate configuration.

GND or LIFT?

The GND position is recommended for normal use. If hum or buzzing consistent with a ground loop occurs when several mains-powered components are connected, try the LIFT position. This switch is for managing the system's grounding arrangement, not for repairing a faulty or noisy component.

COMPACT METAL ENCLOSURE, TWO COLOUR OPTIONS

Measuring 200 × 138 × 44 mm, the L70 takes up little space on a desk or audio rack while keeping the front-panel connections and large volume control within easy reach. It is available in black and silver, making it easier to match with an existing DAC or desktop environment.

The compact footprint does not mean a simplified connection layout: the rear panel includes separate analogue inputs, RCA and XLR preamplifier outputs, a ground switch, Trigger sockets and mains power input. Leave adequate ventilation around the unit and route cables to keep the headphone outputs easily accessible.
