Portable High-Resolution Hi-Fi Audio Player with 20-bit R2R + 4-bit String DAC
The iBasso Audio DX270 R2R Ultra is a new-generation portable Hi-Fi audio player built upon the further development of R2R DAC technology. Instead of using a conventional R2R solution, the device features iBasso’s proprietary R2R Ultra architecture, which integrates discrete R2R circuits, a hybrid 20-bit R2R + 4-bit String DAC design, FPGA-Master 3.0 control, and a hardware-based resistor compensation system into a single integrated platform.
The DX270 aims to minimize one of the greatest challenges of R2R decoding: zero-crossing distortion, while delivering extremely high linearity, a wide dynamic range, and natural, highly detailed sound reproduction. With a 130 dB dynamic range and a THD+N value better than -97 dB, the device belongs to the high-end category of portable digital audio players.
At the heart of the DX270 is iBasso’s independently developed R2R Ultra decoding system. One of the advantages of classic R2R DACs is their natural, analog-like sound signature; however, achieving precise resistor matching and managing the zero-crossing region represent significant engineering challenges.
iBasso addresses these challenges with a sophisticated hybrid DAC design that combines a 20-bit R2R structure with a 4-bit String DAC architecture. The String DAC is responsible for high-bit (MSB) processing, using series resistors and switches to accurately approximate the required voltage value. This enables a wider dynamic range, lower unwanted energy interference, and excellent distortion performance.
The system uses a total of 344 high-precision resistors, nearly twice the number typically found in conventional R2R DACs. As a result, the DX270 is capable of delivering finer resolution, a more natural sound character, and cleaner signal transmission.
The DX270 adopts a fully symmetrical, 8-channel R2R DAC architecture. The positive and negative paths of the left and right channels (L+, L-, R+, R-) each feature independent R2R DAC units, meaning that every channel operates through the cooperation of two DAC circuits.
This fully differential design plays a key role in reducing zero-crossing distortion. In traditional R2R solutions, small linearity errors may occur during the transition between positive and negative voltage ranges, which can result in loss of detail, increased noise, or a less refined low-frequency response.
The DX270’s dual DAC structure compensates for these deviations, ensuring stable and accurate signal transmission even at extremely low signal levels. The result is an exceptionally wide 130 dB dynamic range and a clean, natural sound experience.
One of the most important technological elements of the DX270 is iBasso’s independently developed FPGA-Master 3.0 system. Compared with the previous generation, the new-generation controller offers significantly greater processing capability, with its logical LUT resources increased by 7.5 times.
The FPGA receives audio data directly from the system chip, while two ultra-low-noise Accusilicon femtosecond oscillators ensure precise timing and an extremely low jitter level.
The system functions not only as a digital controller but also as a hardware calibration centre. It is capable of detecting and compensating for component parameter deviations in real time, further improving resistor network accuracy and DAC linearity.
One of the key factors determining the performance of R2R DACs is resistor accuracy. Therefore, the DX270 employs a dedicated hardware-based resistor compensation network, working together with 76 extremely precise resistors and FPGA algorithms.
This combination of software and hardware optimization significantly improves decoding accuracy, reduces distortion, and increases dynamic range performance. The resulting effective resistor accuracy represents only 1.4 units of deviation out of 100,000.
Zero-crossing distortion is a known challenge in R2R DAC technology, mainly occurring at extremely low signal levels. Its effects may appear as loss of detail, slight noise, or less controlled low-frequency reproduction.
The DX270’s fully differential architecture and precise calibration system reduce this phenomenon to an extremely low level, reaching values as low as -120 dB. As a result, subtle instrumental details, vocal nuances, and quiet dynamic changes are reproduced with exceptional accuracy.
The accuracy of digital-to-analog conversion is fundamentally determined by linearity. When the DAC output curve deviates from the ideal value, harmonic distortion, intermodulation distortion, and other errors may occur.
Thanks to its ultra-precise resistor matching, accurate switching structure, and optimized circuit design, the DX270 remains extremely close to the ideal signal curve.
A végeredmény egy tiszta, zajmentes háttér, amely lehetővé teszi a zene térbeli részleteinek, finom textúráinak és természetes dinamizmusának pontos megjelenítését.The result is a clean, noise-free background that allows spatial details, delicate textures, and the natural dynamics of music to be reproduced with outstanding precision.
The DX270 is not only built around an audiophile-grade DAC system but can also function as a complete portable audio player. The device is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 system chip, 4 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of UFS 2.1 internal storage, ensuring fast operation and smooth user interaction.
The storage can be expanded up to 2 TB via a microSD card, allowing large FLAC, DSD, and other high-resolution music libraries to be stored conveniently.
The 5.5-inch In-cell touchscreen with a resolution of 1080 × 2160 provides precise control and detailed visual presentation.
The DX270 runs on Android 13, enabling the installation of various streaming applications. The system supports SRC (Sample Rate Conversion) bypass, allowing applications such as Mango Player to access the audio hardware at maximum quality.
The device also features a dedicated Linux-based Mango OS system, providing an environment optimized exclusively for music playback. It offers lower system load, reduced electromagnetic interference, and operation free from WiFi and Bluetooth interference.
The DX270 provides the unique option of using a 12 V external DC power supply. When externally powered, the amplifier’s power supply can be increased from ±8 V to ±12 V, activating Super Gain mode.
In this mode, the device can deliver up to 1575 mW + 1575 mW output power at a 32-ohm load, making it suitable for driving even high-power-demand headphones.
The DX270 uses two dual-channel JRC analog volume control ICs, forming a four-channel volume control system.
The system effectively reduces noise levels even at low volume settings, while providing a SINAD value exceeding 91 dB at a 50 mV output signal during normal listening levels.
The DX270 offers a wide range of connectivity options for different headphones and audio systems.
The 4.4 mm balanced headphone output provides powerful driving capability, while the 3.5 mm output is compatible with traditional single-ended headphones and IEMs. The 4.4 mm line output allows connection to external amplifiers, while the 3.5 mm coaxial digital output supports digital signal transmission up to 384 kHz.
In USB DAC mode, the DX270 can also be used alongside a computer or smartphone as an external high-resolution R2R DAC.
• Output Power: 1575 mW + 1575 mW @32 Ω (12 V DC)
• Output Power: 416 mW + 416 mW @32 Ω (12 V DC)
The volume control wheel of the iBasso DX270 features a slight amount of play (small lateral movement) by design. iBasso intentionally implemented this solution to make the volume wheel more resistant to accidental impacts, drops, or lateral forces. The small movement range helps reduce mechanical stress, ensuring reliable operation over the long term.
The volume control wheel is made entirely from precision-engineered metal components and is mechanically connected to the internal volume control module. The slight amount of play is a natural characteristic of this construction, specifically designed by iBasso to improve durability.
