At the heart of the R30 is Gustard’s proprietary discrete R-2R DAC module. Unlike conventional delta-sigma converters, R-2R technology uses a more direct conversion principle, transforming the digital signal into analogue through a resistor ladder.

R-2R DACs are regarded as one of the most highly respected solutions in the audiophile world, primarily because of their natural sound character, lifelike tonality and excellent spatial imaging. However, designs of this kind can only realise their full potential when built with extremely tight component tolerances and meticulous engineering. This is precisely what Gustard prioritised when developing the R30.

The Gustard R30 operates as a true 1-bit D/A converter and supports native DSD1024 signals via I²S.

In DIRECT DSD mode, the DSD data stream is sent directly to the dedicated 1-bit decoding circuit without PCM conversion. This allows the distinctive timing characteristics and fine detail of the DSD format to reach the analogue stage directly, potentially delivering a particularly open and detailed presentation with high-resolution DSD recordings.

The central component of the digital section is a programmable FPGA logic processor that enables the use of Gustard’s proprietary algorithms. Clock management, DoP processing, PCM and DSD signal handling, and the internal digital processes all run on this platform.

The built-in digital filter system employs intelligent oversampling and precise noise shaping. Its purpose is to reconstruct the digital signal as accurately as possible while minimising distortion and unwanted side effects. As a result, the soundstage is clearer and individual details are more distinctly separated, while the music retains its natural character.

Accurate timing is one of the most important elements of digital audio. The R30 therefore employs OCXO technology based on an SC-cut quartz crystal. This design provides excellent temperature stability and exceptionally accurate operation over the long term.

The Gustard GCLK-02 clock module uses advanced PLL technology to provide a high degree of frequency and phase stability. Precise timing helps reduce distortion in the digital signal, potentially resulting in an audibly cleaner and more precise presentation.

For those seeking to maximise the performance of their system, the R30 also supports the connection of an external 10 MHz reference clock, further improving timing accuracy.

The R30 can be used not only as a DAC but also as a complete digital source hub. Its built-in passive analogue preamplifier employs relay-based R-2R volume control, enabling lossless signal-level adjustment.

The device can also be connected directly to active speakers or power amplifiers, eliminating the need for a separate preamplifier in certain systems. This provides a simpler signal path and a more streamlined system configuration while retaining the convenience of remote control.

Developed through a collaboration between Gustard and CelWare, the network system uses a streamlined architecture that omits all hardware and software elements that do not directly contribute to achieving higher sound quality.

The CelWare 3.x system uses an optimised Linux environment that gives music playback processes high priority. It was developed to ensure that all resources support the processing of the music data stream while minimising unnecessary background processes.

Following D/A conversion, the analogue signal passes through a fully discrete Class A low-pass filter stage. Gustard developed this circuit specifically to meet the requirements of the R-2R architecture.

An analogue stage built from individual transistors, resistors and capacitors offers considerably greater freedom in circuit tuning than solutions based on integrated operational amplifiers. The result is a harmonious balance between refined tonality, natural dynamics and accurate frequency response.

The R30 uses two audiophile-grade toroidal transformers. One exclusively supplies power to the digital circuits, while the other powers the analogue circuitry. Complete electrical separation reduces the possibility of interference while providing a stable operating environment for every section of the device.
