The TOPPING A70 Pro is a high-power, fully balanced desktop headphone amplifier and analogue preamplifier. Built around T'ang-ku-la amplifier modules, it combines substantial output reserves with low self-noise for sensitive IEMs as well as demanding dynamic and planar magnetic headphones.

The front panel provides 4-pin XLR, 4.4 mm Pentaconn and 6.35 mm headphone outputs. Relay-based R2R volume control, two gain settings and independent output volume memory provide precise, convenient control when using different headphones and listening setups.

AN ANALOGUE HUB BETWEEN DAC AND HEADPHONES

The A70 Pro sits after a DAC or another line-level analogue source. It has no digital inputs or built-in DAC, so a computer, network player, CD transport or television first connects to a separate DAC, while the A70 Pro amplifies the resulting analogue signal for headphones.

The unit provides one balanced XLR input and one single-ended RCA input. In addition to its three headphone connections, it includes variable RCA and XLR preamplifier outputs, allowing it to serve as the central analogue component in a headphone chain, an active speaker system or a setup with a separate power amplifier.

TOPPING A70 Pro T'ang-ku-la amplifier module — T'ang-ku-la is TOPPING's amplifier module designed for high power and low noise, using a three-stage feedback circuit.

T'ANG-KU-LA MODULES FOR HIGH POWER AND LOW NOISE

The A70 Pro is built around TOPPING's T'ang-ku-la amplifier modules. The manufacturer uses a new three-stage feedback circuit intended to further reduce high-frequency distortion and self-noise while retaining substantial load-driving capability at the headphone output.

The module design also aims to reduce heat generation. According to TOPPING, this provides more favourable operating conditions for electronic components and helps preserve low-noise amplifier operation over extended use.

TOPPING A70 Pro re-optimised amplifier circuit — The new input stage is designed for lower noise, a higher 20 kΩ input impedance and improved performance at high gain.

HIGH POWER ACROSS A WIDE IMPEDANCE RANGE

The A70 Pro's balanced output delivers up to 2 × 17,000 mW into a 16-ohm load. This provides substantial headroom for low-sensitivity planar magnetic and dynamic headphones, while also supplying the voltage required by 300- or 600-ohm designs.

High power is also available through the single-ended headphone output, so conventional headphones using a 6.35 mm connection do not require a separate amplifier. The manufacturer specifies load impedances above 8 Ω, covering the most common headphone and IEM loads.

TOPPING A70 Pro in a desktop headphone system — High output reserves provide useful headroom for listening volume and dynamic peaks with larger, more demanding headphones.

LOW NOISE FOR SENSITIVE EARPHONES TOO

High power alone is not enough when using sensitive earphones. The A70 Pro's two gain settings allow a wider, finer usable volume range at low gain while maintaining the low actual noise figures specified by the manufacturer.

TOPPING specifies a 106.3 dB dynamic range at a 50 mV output voltage. This low-level measurement indicates that the A70 Pro is designed to pursue low self-noise not only at high power, but also with sensitive earphones and lower listening levels.

RELAY-BASED R2R VOLUME CONTROL AND TWO GAIN LEVELS

The A70 Pro volume control uses relays and a resistor network in an R2R arrangement. This construction is intended to provide precise steps, strong channel balance and stable long-term operation. It is particularly useful at low volume, where channel mismatch can be more noticeable with conventional potentiometers.

Depending on the signal path, gain through the balanced headphone output is 6.0 or 19.8 dB, while single-ended output gain is 0 or 13.8 dB. Low gain suits sensitive IEMs and easily driven headphones, while high gain provides more headroom for models with greater power requirements.

INDIVIDUAL VOLUME MEMORY FOR EACH SYSTEM SITUATION

The A70 Pro does not rely on one global volume setting. It can separately remember headphone amplifier plus preamplifier operation, all headphone outputs, preamplifier outputs, and individual use of the 6.35 mm, 4.4 mm, XLR, RCA and XLR line outputs.

In practice, if sensitive IEMs, a large headphone and active speakers require different listening levels, the A70 Pro can restore the last used value when outputs are changed. This does not replace careful volume handling, but makes daily use quicker and more organised.

TOPPING A70 Pro RC-16A remote control with C1 and C2 memory — Holding the RC-16A remote's C1 or C2 button for three seconds saves a complete system state, which can later be recalled with one press.

AURORA INTERFACE, VU AND FFT VIEWS

The Aurora interface combines a large colour display with three touch buttons. In addition to volume, gain, input and output mode, several visual views can be selected, including a VU meter and FFT spectrum. These do not alter the sound, but make the operating state and musical signal easier to follow visually.

Custom shortcuts are available through a long press of the control knob, and Chinese or English can be selected as the user-interface language on first start-up. The menu system is designed so that routine adjustments do not require a computer or separate app.

EXPANDABLE INPUTS FOR MORE ANALOGUE SOURCES

In its standard configuration, the A70 Pro provides one XLR and one RCA analogue input pair. This can accommodate a DAC and another analogue source, such as a phono preamplifier or other component, while keeping the system simple and easy to understand.

Where several DACs, analogue players or separate component chains need to be connected, the optional EXT90 input expander provides four XLR and two RCA input pairs. The EXT90 is sold separately, so expansion is only necessary when the standard input count is no longer sufficient.

TOPPING A70 Pro GND LIFT ground-loop switch — The GND/LIFT switch can help interrupt an unwanted grounding path if a ground loop causes hum.

GND or LIFT?

GND is recommended for normal use. If several mains-powered components produce ground-loop hum after being connected together, try the LIFT position. This switch manages the system's grounding arrangement and is not intended to repair a faulty component.

HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER, PREAMPLIFIER OR BOTH TOGETHER

The A70 Pro can also operate as a preamplifier, so its analogue volume control acts on the rear RCA and XLR line outputs. This allows direct control of active speakers or a separate power amplifier, while headphone output remains available according to the selected output mode.

Preamplifier output impedance is 50 Ω through RCA and 100 Ω through XLR. These values support suitable matching with the inputs of most modern active speakers and power amplifiers. Set volume low before connecting a downstream component, then increase it gradually because the preamplifier output directly controls the following component's volume.

The A70 Pro matches the TOPPING D70 Pro SABRE DAC in both design language and function. The DAC handles USB, S/PDIF, Bluetooth or other digital sources, while the A70 Pro turns its balanced analogue signal into the power required by headphones or an active system. This pairing is not exclusive, as the A70 Pro can be used with any suitable line-output DAC.

Its 12 V Trigger In and Out connections allow compatible components to switch on and off together. The A70 Pro can follow another component's Trigger signal or actively control further compatible devices.
